Most cold weather advice assumes you are moving. Walking generates a remarkable amount of heat, and clothing designed for it is built to shed the excess.
An aurora night is the opposite activity. You stand nearly motionless in an open field for anything from twenty minutes to several hours, usually somewhere with wind and no shelter, generating almost no heat at all. Clothing that works for a winter hike will leave you cold, and the reason has less to do with insulation than with moisture.
The thing that actually gets people cold
Arctic military doctrine has a blunt phrase for it: sweat kills. Not as hyperbole about frostbite, but as a description of the mechanism.
You leave a warm hotel wearing everything you own. You walk to the bus carrying a bag. You are slightly too warm and you sweat a little, which is normal and feels like nothing. Then you stand still in an open field at minus fifteen for two hours, and that moisture is now sitting against your skin conducting heat away from you far faster than dry air would.
Which leads to the counterintuitive rule: be slightly cold during the transfer. Arrive at the bus underdressed, carry your outer layers, and add them when you get out at the viewpoint. Almost everyone does the reverse.
The layers, and what each is for

Merino is worth the money for the base layer specifically because it keeps insulating when damp, and because you will wear it several days running. Synthetic works and smells worse by night three.
The parts that get cold first
- Feet. Standing on frozen ground conducts heat straight out of you. Boots one size larger than usual, so a thick wool sock does not compress. Compressed insulation does nothing. If you take one piece of advice from this page, this is it.
- Hands. Mittens beat gloves by a wide margin. If you plan to use a camera, thin liner gloves under mittens, so you can take the mittens off for thirty seconds without touching metal bare-handed.
- Head and neck. A hat that covers the ears, and something over the face. Wind on exposed skin at minus twenty does damage faster than people expect.
- Legs. Consistently underdressed. Thermal leggings under trousers, and a windproof outer layer. Jeans are useless: cotton, no wind resistance, and miserable when damp.
What the operator gives you
Most established aurora operators in Tromso, Rovaniemi and Reykjavik provide an insulated overall, and often boots. These are genuinely good, purpose-built for exactly this, and they solve the outer layer problem completely.
What they do not solve is your base layer, and that is the one that decides whether you are comfortable. The thermal suit goes over whatever you are wearing; if that is a cotton t-shirt you sweated into on the walk to the pickup point, the suit traps the problem rather than fixing it.
Check whether the suit is included before packing a heavy coat you will not need. It is usually listed under inclusions, and if it is not mentioned, ask.
Small things that matter more than they should
- Batteries die in the cold. Phone and camera both. Keep spares in an inside pocket against your body. A phone at minus twenty can drop from 60% to nothing in minutes, and it will usually recover once warm.
- Chemical hand warmers cost almost nothing and are the highest return item you can pack. One in each boot as well as each pocket.
- A flask of something hot is worth more at 01:00 than any additional layer.
- Do not breathe into your scarf if you can avoid it. The moisture freezes and you end up with ice against your face.
- Take the glasses problem seriously. Going from a warm minibus into cold air fogs then freezes lenses. Leave them off for the transition, or keep them cold.
Practical questions
How cold does it actually get?
Tromso is milder than its latitude suggests thanks to the Gulf Stream, often between minus 5 and minus 10 in midwinter. Rovaniemi and inland Lapland are colder and can reach minus 25 or below. Reykjavik is mildest of the three and windiest, which cancels much of the advantage.
Do I need to buy expensive gear?
No, if the operator provides the thermal suit. Spend on a merino base layer, proper socks and mittens, and skip the expensive coat. If nothing is provided, renting locally is cheaper than buying.
Are heated insoles or gloves worth it?
Heated insoles, yes, if you are prone to cold feet. Heated gloves are bulky and the batteries fade in cold. Chemical warmers do most of the job for a fraction of the cost.
What about children?
Children lose heat faster and complain sooner, and the point at which they stop enjoying it arrives well before the point at which they are actually at risk. Shorter tours, more layers, and a plan for getting back to the vehicle. Covered on our page about going with children.
How cold it actually gets, by destination
People pack for the latitude and are wrong in both directions. Tromso is further north than almost anywhere else you have been and milder than you expect; Rovaniemi is further south and considerably colder.

The counterintuitive result is that Reykjavik at freezing point can feel worse than Rovaniemi at minus 20, because wind strips heat far faster than still air and damp clothing conducts it away. Anyone who has done both will tell you the same thing.
Which changes what you pack. For Iceland the priority is a genuinely windproof shell. For Finnish Lapland it is insulation and, above all, footwear. For Tromso it is both, plus the assumption that everything will be slightly damp.
The order you put things on, and take them off
Since the failure mode is sweat rather than cold, the sequencing matters as much as the garments.
- Dress light for the transfer. Base layer and mid layer only, outer layers carried. You should feel slightly cool walking to the pickup.
- Add the shell when you get out, not before. If the operator provides a thermal suit, this is when it goes on.
- Vent before you overheat, not after. Open the neck or take off a hat for a few minutes if you feel yourself warming up. Once you have sweated it is too late, and it will cost you two hours later.
- Change your base layer if it is damp before a long stop, if you have a spare. This sounds excessive and is the single most effective thing on this list.
- Keep the extremities warm before they get cold. Hand warmers go in the boots and mittens at the start, not when your feet are already numb. Rewarming cold extremities is slow and unpleasant; keeping them warm is easy.
The general principle behind all five: your body is producing almost no heat on this trip. Everything you are wearing is preserving what you had when you left the hotel, and moisture is the fastest way to lose it.
