8 departures from Finland's largest ski resort, where half the aurora tours run on a trail network built for something else
Levi is a ski resort first and an aurora destination second, and once you know that, the shape of this page makes sense. Half the departures here are snowmobile safaris. That is not because a snowmobile is a good place to watch the northern lights, which it is not, but because Levi already has the machines, the guides and several hundred kilometres of maintained winter trail, all built for a different business.
The location is genuinely good, though. At 67°48′N this is more than a degree north of Rovaniemi, comfortably inside the auroral oval, and Kittilä airport is 15 km away with direct winter flights from a dozen European cities. You can land in the afternoon and be standing in the dark by nine.
What Levi does not have is scale. Eight departures against Rovaniemi's 81 means fewer operators competing, and one visible consequence: only one tour here attaches a guarantee to a blank night, where in Rovaniemi thirteen do. The upside of the same fact is that the pull-offs are not full of other people's headlights.

A resort, and what that changes
Ski resorts are bright. Levi runs floodlit pistes into the evening, the village is lit, and the whole thing sits at the foot of the fell it is named after. That is the bad news, and it is the reason every operator on this page starts by getting you out of it.
The good news is how quickly that happens. Levi is a small resort surrounded immediately by nothing at all: fell country, frozen bog, forest and the odd road. Ten minutes of driving or riding puts the resort glow behind a ridge, which is a shorter escape than most Lapland towns manage. And the fell itself, Levitunturi, tops out at 531 metres above a treeline that in this part of the world sits a couple of hundred metres lower. A treeless summit with a gondola running up it is an unusually convenient piece of aurora infrastructure, and it is free to look at once you are there.
Why the northern horizon is the whole game
A display almost always starts as a low, quiet arc lying across the northern horizon, and only later, if the night gets serious, does it climb overhead and start moving. Which means the first hour of most aurora nights is decided entirely by what is in the way at ground level to the north of you.
In Lapland what is in the way is trees. A spruce forest 20 metres tall removes the bottom fifteen degrees of your sky in every direction, and fifteen degrees is where the arc lives. This is why the tours here keep talking about clearings, lakes and fells rather than about darkness: they are all the same request, an unobstructed view of the north. When two listings look identical and one names its viewpoint, book that one.
What the eight departures are
The price band here is narrow, from 145 to 270 EUR with a median of 154, and unusually the cheapest and the dearest are not the same product at different volumes. They are different things.

Two of these carry review scores of 4.9, which in a category where the headline attraction fails most nights is close to remarkable, and both are small-group operations run by people who live here.
When to go, and why the answer splits
Half of this page needs snow on the trails and half does not, and once you put the cloud record and the darkness on the same line the two halves stop agreeing about the best month.

January is the best month at Levi, which is not the answer anywhere else in Finland: 28.4% of nights usable over seven and a half hours of darkness, with reliable snow for the four snowmobile departures. March at 50.3% has the highest single cloud figure of any Finnish base and only 3.8 hours of dark, which lands it level with October.
October is the month the road tours should use and the snowmobiles cannot: the best sky-and-darkness balance available before the snow arrives. September comes last, at 2.2 hours of darkness, and it is the month the resort is emptiest and the marketing loudest.
One limit, stated because it argues against the ranking: it measures how much dark clear sky a month contains, not the chance the aurora does something inside it. Geomagnetic storms are close to twice as frequent at the equinoxes, favouring September and March. Even doubling September leaves it last here.

The extra degree of latitude matters less than people assume, and the sky figures confirm it: the two bases are within a point of each other across the season. What differs is the size of the market, and it cuts both ways. If you are combining the aurora with skiing, the question answers itself.

When should I come?
January if you want the snowmobiles, because it pairs reliable trail cover with the best sky-and-darkness figure of the Levi year. October if you are happy with a road tour, because it is the best balance available before the snow. March has the highest cloud figure of any Finnish base at 50.3% and only 3.8 hours of dark to use it in. September is last.
Can I see the aurora from the resort itself?
On a strong night, yes, and from the top of the fell more often than from the village. On an ordinary night the floodlit pistes and the village lights will cost you the faint arc that most displays consist of. Ten minutes of driving fixes it.
Is Levi better than Rovaniemi because it is further north?
Not meaningfully. Across the season the two are within a point of each other on usable-sky nights, and both sit under the auroral oval. What changes is the number of operators: 8 against 81.
Snowmobile or minibus?
Minibus if the aurora is the point and you have one night: a van can drive out from under cloud, a snowmobile realistically cannot. Snowmobile if you want the evening to be an activity, or if you are already here to ski.
Can I combine skiing and aurora hunting in the same day?
Easily, and it is the main argument for basing here. The lifts close in the afternoon, the aurora tours leave in the evening, and the whole resort is walkable.
