Reykjavik
The night starts when the guide collects you from your chosen pickup spot in Reykjavík, in a 4x4 super jeep equipped for the roads ahead. With everyone aboard, the jeep leaves the city glow behind for the quiet dark of the countryside. The route can pass some of Iceland's natural landmarks, invisible at this hour but pointed out by the guide as you go. Using the less travelled rural roads keeps the group away from the crowds and widens the choice of places to stop.
Iceland
When conditions look right, the guide picks the viewing spot from the evening's forecasts, and then everyone waits. The aurora usually forms about 100 kilometres (60 miles) above the ground, near the north magnetic pole, which is further away than most people assume while standing underneath it. Dress warmly. Icelandic night air is cold enough to end an evening early. A fleece and one of the blankets on board will keep that at bay, and a cup of cocoa with a piece of chocolate helps too. When the lights do appear, the guides photograph the group each time, so nobody goes home relying on a phone snapshot.
Reykjavik
The night ends with a drop-off in Reykjavík at your original pickup location. One honest note: the Northern Lights are hard to predict, and the guides work the forecasts to give you the best chance rather than a promise.
