Tromso

A 5 to 6 hour hunt for clear sky around Tromsø, leaving at 19:00 and heading in whichever direction the night favours, away from the city lights. Some evenings the group does not have to go far and gets more time standing outside. Others turn into a proper chase before anything is found. Most nights out produce some aurora, though nobody can promise it: this is weather, not a scheduled show. There are several stops through the evening to look, and sometimes the lights are directly overhead. When the weather and the activity allow, there is a longer stop with a bonfire, a prepared meal (a portion of soup or stew) and a hot drink. Six guests is the maximum this season, which is small even by the standards of tours that call themselves small group. A private option exists if you want fewer still.

  1. Tromsø

The meeting point is by the Magic Ice Bar at Kaigata 4. Arrive a few minutes early so the group can leave on time.

  2. Tromso

The tour starts in downtown Tromsø, which sits directly under the auroral oval, one of the reasons this town works so well for aurora hunting. Most of the evening is spent outside the city. The favourite spots are all by the sea, and in northern Norway the sea never freezes, thanks to the Gulf Stream. The water is warmer than the air for most of the winter, and a few people are mad enough to swim in it. If the coast is clouded over, the group heads inland toward the mountains instead. The advantage of Tromsø is choice: roads run in every direction and there are plenty of places to try. The group goes wherever is safest and most likely to deliver, which is sometimes 30 minutes out of the city, and sometimes the Finnish border, about a 2.5 hour drive away.
