Guiding on this package is listed in Mandarin and English. The price covers three nights in a Yellowknife hotel, airport pickup and drop-off at any hour of the day or night, and an air-conditioned vehicle. Food and drink are not included, and neither is a mandatory service fee charged per day in Yellowknife. The four days follow a simple pattern. You land, check in, and head out for the first aurora session at around 10 pm. Day two brings a city tour of Great Slave Lake, Old Town, the Pilot's Monument and the Visitor Centre, then another night out from about 10 pm. Day three is free until the evening session, same time again. On the last day you have the hours to yourself before the transfer back to the airport. Three nights out is the real reason to book a package like this. The operator cites an average of 240 aurora nights a year in the central Northwest Territories, but any single night depends on cloud and solar activity, and the operator states that it takes no responsibility if the lights stay hidden or show only faintly. More nights mean more chances. They do not mean a sighting. If the sky does open, the colour you are most likely to see is green, produced by oxygen atoms roughly 120 km up when charged particles from the sun hit the upper atmosphere. One booking takes up to four travellers. All sales are final, with no refund if you cancel.

Itinerary

  1. Yellowknife

Arrival in Yellowknife and transfer to the hotel. The first aurora viewing session starts at about 10 pm.

  2. Great Slave Lake

Great Slave Lake draws anglers for its trout and pike, and the rivers feeding it hold plenty of Arctic grayling. Less familiar is the inconnu, a large fish of the whitefish family that many anglers have never heard of.

  3. Old Town

Old Town is where Yellowknife began, on the spot where the Precambrian Shield meets Great Slave Lake. Gold seekers settled here roughly 80 years ago, and their camp grew into the biggest settlement in the North. In the 1960s the city centre moved to the area still called "new town", but Old Town kept its own character. Log cabins stand beside designer houses and colourful houseboats, floatplanes come and go overhead, and local artists sell their work. Walk Ragged Ass Road, stop somewhere to eat, and climb to Pilot's Monument, which has the best view in the city.

  4. Yellowknife

City tour day: Great Slave Lake, the second largest lake in Canada, then Old Town, the Pilot's Monument and the Visitor Centre. The aurora viewing resumes at about 10 pm.

  5. Yellowknife

A free day to plan as you like. In the evening, the aurora viewing session starts again at about 10 pm.

  6. Yellowknife

Free time until departure, then the transfer to the airport for your flight home.
