ReykjavikTwo Icelandic days folded into one, with dinner in between. The morning is the Golden Circle, the most travelled route in the country. The walking path at Thingvellir runs between two continental plates, and at Geysir, Strokkur goes off every few minutes without needing to be asked. After a full day out there, the bus returns to Reykjavik and you get a few hours to rest and eat. The evening is the aurora hunt. The guides look for clear sky rather than a scenic spot, and then everyone waits, which is what hunting the northern lights actually consists of. Complimentary hot chocolate makes the waiting shorter.

Golden Circle Route
The Golden Circle is the standard day route out of Reykjavik, taking in three landmark sites: the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir national park.
Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site twice over, as a piece of geology and as the historical centre of the country.
Geysir
Geysir is on every itinerary in Iceland for good reason. Strokkur is the one that performs: it erupts reliably every 5 to 10 minutes, sending water and steam up to 130ft.
Gullfoss Falls
Gullfoss, the Golden waterfall, is among the most powerful in Iceland. Fed by a glacial river to the north, the water drops in several stages before it reaches the canyon floor.
Kerid Crater
Keríð crater is what a large volcanic eruption left behind some 6500 years ago. Groundwater has filled the bottom into a lake. Take the steps down to the water or walk the rim.
Hveragerdi
A short refreshment break in Hveragerdi.
Reykjavik
Back in Reykjavík for a few hours between the daytime sightseeing and the pickup for the northern lights hunt. Time enough to freshen up and eat.
Reykjanes Peninsula
The evening tour works the countryside within a 90 minute radius of Reykjavik. The aurora guides read the Icelandic Met Office aurora forecast alongside cloud cover charts, looking for clear sky and, with luck, a strong display.
