Golden Circle, Keríð Crater, Secret Lagoon and Northern Lights Combo
Two tours sold together at a reduced rate, which is how one day ends up holding this much. The morning covers five stops on the Golden Circle: Keríð crater, the Secret Lagoon, Geysir, Gullfoss and Thingvellir National Park. Volcanic rock, geothermal water and the place where two tectonic plates pull apart, all inside a single loop out of Reykjavík. Then back to town for a few hours off. Eat something. The evening half is the northern lights hunt, and it leaves from the same place as the morning bus, though not on the same bus. The guides drive well past the city lights looking for a hole in the cloud and the green and red shimmer underneath it. Home made hot chocolate comes with the waiting.

Golden Circle Route
The Golden Circle is the standard day route out of Reykjavik, and it takes in three of Iceland's landmark sites: the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir national park.
Kerid Crater
An old volcanic crater filled with water, with walking trails around the rim and a path that winds down into the mouth of the volcano. 65 minutes drive to Keríð. 25 minutes on location.
Geysir
Geysir gave every other geyser on earth its name, one of the rare cases of an Icelandic word going international. 25 minutes drive to location. 75 minutes on location. The walk goes past steaming pools and a hot stream to Strokkur, which fires steam and boiling water into the air roughly every 10 minutes, so nobody has to wait long. Its record height is around 40 metres.
Gullfoss Falls
Gullfoss is among the most powerful waterfalls in Iceland, a multi drop fall fed largely by meltwater from Langjökull glacier, which sits north of it. Several viewing platforms give different angles, and the walking trails take you close enough to feel the spray on your face. In particularly hard winters Gullfoss has been known to freeze over, though that happens less and less. 15 minutes drive to location. 40 minutes on location.
Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir is a UNESCO site for two separate reasons. The first is Icelandic history: Alþingi, the country's parliament, first met on this ground in the late 10th century, with chieftains travelling from all over the island to argue the issues of the day. The second is geology. Thingvellir sits on the mid-Atlantic ridge, between the European and American plates, and Iceland is the only country where that ridge can be walked on dry land, with the edge of each plate visible from the path. 60 minutes drive to location. 40 minutes on location. 45 minutes drive onward.
Secret Lagoon - Gamla Laugin
The Secret Lagoon, or Gamla Laugin, is the oldest geothermal pool in Iceland and a reliable refuge from an Icelandic winter afternoon. The entrance ticket is included in the tour price. Bring a swimsuit and a towel, or rent them there for a fee.

The evening northern lights hunt uses a different bus from the morning Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon tour. The guides head out into the countryside after the aurora, and will drive to several locations in one night if that is what finding clear sky takes.
