Night Reindeer Sledding with Camp Dinner and a Chance of Aurora

The Sámi have worked this land with reindeer for centuries, and only recently started inviting visitors into that daily routine. This evening is a visit to their camp. The herd runs to around 300 reindeer, and feeding them means standing in the middle of the crowd while some eat straight from your hands. Then a sleigh ride of 15 to 20 minutes behind the reindeer. Afterwards, hot drinks around the fire in a candlelit gamme, the traditional Sámi hut, where a three course meal is served without hurry. It includes bidos, a Sámi stew, cooked over the open fire. After dinner the group moves into a lavvu, the Sámi tent, and sits round the fire while the guide talks about Sámi culture and the working life of a reindeer herder. The guide also performs a joik, the traditional Sámi song. If the sky is clear, the aurora can appear over the camp.
