Reykjavik

Reykjavík has something most capital cities do not: genuinely dark water a few minutes from the harbour. That is the reason these cruises sail out into the North Atlantic instead of driving inland, and the reason the coastline here counts among the better places on earth to watch the aurora. The Amelia Rose does the sailing. What happens after that belongs to the sky, which owes nobody anything, so bring patience and a bit of optimism. The terms are worth reading before you book. If no lights appear, there is no refund. What you get instead is a free return sailing, subject to availability, valid for up to three years. Weather can also force the cancellation of a departure, and notice of that arrives by email.

  1. Ægisgarður 2, Reykjavík

Departures are from Reykjavík Old Harbour, near the city centre and the main port for whale watching and northern lights tours. Please arrive 30 minutes before departure.

  2. Old Harbour

The ship leaves Reykjavík's Old Harbour and sails among the small islands of Faxaflói Bay and along the city coast, which is the best view of Reykjavík anyone gets. Minke and humpback whales, dolphins and porpoises are the common sightings, and orcas turn up now and then along with a long list of rarer species. The team on board spot whales for a living and are good at it.

  3. Ægisgarður 2, Reykjavík
