Northern Lights Yacht Cruise from Reykjavík aboard the Harpa, Max 35
A small boat changes the character of a cold night. The Harpa takes 35 passengers at most, so there is room at the rail and a warm interior to retreat into, with a bar and café on board and blankets handed out for the deck. The route runs along Reykjavík's coastline, often passing the Imagine Peace light tower, while the crew works out where the darkest water is. If the aurora stays away, you can join another sailing free. On special occasions the Amelia Rose, which carries up to 98 passengers, is used instead. Both boats have the same facilities on board.

Ægisgarður 2, Reykjavík
The departure point is Reykjavík Old Harbour, close to the city centre, and the main port for whale watching and northern lights tours. Arrive 30 minutes before departure.
Reykjavik
Reykjavik's old harbour, the Harpa concert hall seen from the water, the city coastline, Videy island, and the aurora borealis over all of it.
Videy Island
Viðey island lies just off the Reykjavík coast, quiet in a way the city is not, with history and art on it in equal measure. The Imagine Peace Tower stands here, Yoko Ono's memorial to John Lennon. Walking trails cross the island and open onto views of the surrounding ocean.
Faxafloi Bay
Faxaflói Bay opens west of Reykjavík, deep enough for humpback and minke whales and lined with seabird colonies along its shores. Crossing it at night puts open Arctic water underneath you and nothing between the boat and the sky.
