A private jeep changes who the night belongs to. Nobody else is in the vehicle, so the decisions are yours and the guide's: when to move on, how long to stay, whether to try one more spot before heading back to town. The superjeeps here are Land Rover Defenders on 40 inch wheels, out every day of the year, driven by guides who spend their working lives on Icelandic roads and well off them. Inside: leather seats, air conditioning, WiFi, GPS, a first-aid kit, trackwell and other safety equipment, with an extra fold-down step so getting in is not a climb. Four hours, a maximum of 6 passengers, and the city's light pollution behind you early. Sightings are possible from autumn to spring, given clear sky and a little luck.
