Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel by Night and Northern Lights from Reykjavík
An evening that starts underground and ends looking up. The pickup is in Reykjavík and the road goes to the Blue Mountains, where Raufarhólshellir sits: a lava tube left behind by an eruption more than 5,000 years ago. A guide takes the group in and explains what the colours on the walls are and how the tunnel formed. Afterwards the minibus heads into the quiet countryside, and the team picks the spot with the best chance of aurora that night. Warm blankets and treats come out for the waiting. One night, two things Iceland has that almost nowhere else does.

Reykjavik
The tour covers Iceland's fourth longest lava tube and then the northern lights. It starts with a pickup from your chosen location in a comfortable minibus, and the drive to the Raufarhólshellir lava cave takes about 45 minutes from Reykjavík. Inside, an hour goes into the lava formations and colours, walking as far as 900 metres (2952 ft) into the tunnel. Then it is back out into the country after the aurora. If the lights appear the guides take photographs, so you go home with a picture of yourself under them, and there is hot chocolate to drink while the sky decides.
Raufarholshellir
The first stop is the Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel, where a cave expert joins the group. After the gear and a short safety briefing, the descent begins. The route mixes built paths and footbridges with natural ground, which keeps it interesting and suits most ages, though the footing is uneven in places. Deeper in, the walls carry emerald greens, reds, turquoise and pale lilac, all of it left by volcanic chemistry. The guide explains how the tunnel was made.
Iceland
After the lava tunnel the group gets back on the bus and starts hunting. The destination stays flexible and follows the latest forecast. The city lights get left behind either way, and the night might end at Þingvellir, Reykjanes or somewhere quieter in South Iceland where the sky is clearest. A minibus reaches places a full size coach cannot, which widens the options. When the aurora shows, the guide takes a free photograph of you underneath it.
Reykjavik
After the evening ends, the drop-off is in Reykjavík at the location you selected.
