Fairbanks

Two activities in a day, plus lunch, at Borealis Basecamp outside Fairbanks. The reindeer part comes first: experienced handlers introduce the herd, and you can feed the animals, get close to them and take photographs. The snowmobile route follows the Trans Alaska Pipeline, with a detour through a working Alaskan trapline. The pipeline is worth seeing up close, since it is the reason much of this country has roads at all. The pace is comfortable through snowy forest, with wide views over the Arctic valleys and the White Mountains. Animal tracks in the snow are common, and wildlife sometimes appears even in the coldest weather. The guide points out what you are passing and answers questions about the area as you go.
