Tromso Electric Boat Northern Lights Cruise on the Fjords
An aurora hunt by boat, out into the dark of the Arctic fjords during the polar night. The ship leaves Tromsø and sails toward whichever area the forecast favours that evening, which can mean Kvaløyvågen, Ramfjorden or the southern side of Kvaløya. The crew watch together for clear sky or a break in the cloud. While you wait, the heated lounges keep everyone warm, which is the practical advantage of a boat over standing in a field. The guides talk through the evening, mixing the science of what causes the aurora with the myths different cultures built around it. When the lights appear, everyone puts on warm clothes and goes out on deck. Some nights the display fills the sky in several colours. Other nights it stays faint, or does not come at all. An electric boat has one edge worth knowing about: with the engine near silent, there is no diesel throb under the deck while you are looking up.
