Alaska Railroad Aurora Winter Train, Fairbanks to Anchorage One Way
Twelve hours of Alaskan winter watched from a heated railcar, with proper seats, large picture windows and dining on board. The Aurora Winter Train runs between Fairbanks and Anchorage, southbound on Sundays plus selected midweek departures on Wednesdays and Fridays, from December through March. Along the 50 mile stretch of roadless backcountry south of Hurricane Gulch it still operates flagstop service, which means people who live out there wave it down. Almost no railway anywhere still works that way. The track is the same one the Denali Star covers in summer, and the view is not remotely the same. Summer colour is replaced by snow and quiet. On a clear day Denali comes into view above the Susitna River, and moose turn up anywhere along the line if you are watching. Booking note: all sales are final, with no refund for cancellation.
