This late night departure goes out to a viewing location built for the purpose, far from the lights of the city, and stays put there while the aurora decides what to do. The site belongs to Arctic Range Adventure and the setup is deliberate: no roadside pullouts, no walking back and forth in the dark. Whitehorse is close enough behind you to be irrelevant to the sky overhead. What visitors take home from it, apart from photographs, is the reason the Yukon has so many aurora stories of its own.

Arctic Range Adventure
The aurora site sits well outside Whitehorse, custom built for watching rather than borrowed from a lay-by. The lights themselves come from a chemical reaction: solar energy meets the Earth's atmosphere, and the result can run in dancing waves of green from one horizon to the other. People here have been watching them since long before anyone explained them, which is why the Yukon First Nations have so many legends about the aurora. The tour puts you under that same sky and leaves you to make your own.
