Dog Sled and Reindeer Day Trip to Borealis Basecamp

The mushers here are local and run their teams as family, which shows in how the hour long ride is handled. You ride a real dog sled, seated or standing, behind a team of 8 dogs moving through snowy forest with your guide at a pace that is comfortable without being dull. The visit also takes in the kennels and a replica of a race checkpoint, the kind of place competitive mushers stop at for food and rest during the long winter races. Those checkpoints are where a distance race is actually won or lost, and seeing one explains the sport better than watching a start line. Then the reindeer: experienced handlers introduce the herd at Borealis Basecamp, and you can feed the animals, meet them and take photographs.
