Reykjavik

Make your own way to your hotel in Reykjavík. The accommodation there is part of the package.

Thingvellir National Park

Meet the guide in the hotel lobby at 08:45. The day covers the Golden Circle, starting at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site for both its history and its geology.

Geysir

Then the Geysir hot spring area, where the original geyser sits next to Strokkur, the one that still goes off every few minutes.

Fridheimar

On to Friðheimar, a greenhouse heated and lit by geothermal energy, where tomatoes and other crops grow all year.

Gullfoss Falls

Then Gullfoss, the golden waterfall, and the volume of water going over it.

Vik

The night is spent in the Vík area, which puts you well outside any city lights. If the weather allows, the evening includes a look for the northern lights.

Jokulsarlon

East along the southern shore to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. The lagoon formed around 60 years ago and keeps growing as icebergs calve off the glacier tongue Breiðamerkurjökull. The ice comes in two shades, milky white and bright blue, depending on how the light meets the crystals. Fish drift in from the sea with the tides, and in winter seals gather in numbers at the mouth of the lagoon to catch them.

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach is next to it: black sand with icebergs from the lagoon scattered across it, washed back ashore by the sea. The contrast between the ice and the dark volcanic sand is why photographers keep coming back, and no two days look the same.

Vatnajokull National Park

The return crosses Vatnajökull National Park, which holds Europe's largest glacier along with steep peaks, deep valleys and waterfalls running into them. Ice and volcanic activity have both shaped the ground here, and both are visible at once between the glacial rivers and the vegetation.

Reynisfjara Beach

A day driving the south coast road, with glacier tongues, waterfalls, hills, black sand and the volcanoes the area is known for. The stop is at Reynisfjara, for the rock formations and the surf. Keep well back from the water: the waves here are genuinely dangerous.

Skogafoss

Skógafoss drops 60 metres (197 feet) across a width of 25 metres (82 feet), and on sunny days rainbows form in the spray. Local legend has treasure hidden behind the water, still waiting to be found.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Then Seljalandsfoss, where a path runs behind the falls. Dress for it: the mist back there will soak you.

Blue Lagoon

The last stop before Reykjavik is the Blue Lagoon, which National Geographic put on its list of 25 wonders of the world. The water is mineral rich, and the silica mud treatment is an optional extra.
