A morning pickup from your accommodation or a designated bus stop in Reykjavik, and the drive out begins from there.

Thingvellir National Park

First stop is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the geology and the history sit on the same ground. You walk between the North American and Eurasian plates, see the clear water of the Silfra fissure, and stand where Alþingi, the oldest parliament in the world, was founded.

Next the Geysir hot spring area and Strokkur, which erupts every few minutes and sends hot water up to 20 metres (65 feet).

Gullfoss Falls

Then Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, dropping into a rough canyon. This is the stop where most cameras come out and stay out.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

After the Golden Circle the route turns south to Seljalandsfoss, one of the few waterfalls with a path running behind the water, so you get it from both sides.

Skogafoss

Skógafoss next, falling 32 metres from old sea cliffs. Photographers come for the force of it, the mist and the rainbows that appear in the spray.

Wool Gallery Vik i Myrdal

The day ends in Vík í Mýrdal, a village between the coast and the mountains, where the accommodation is. Depending on the itinerary there may be time to stop at the local Wool Gallery, which sells traditional Icelandic knitwear and handicrafts.

Reynisfjara Beach

The morning starts at Reynisfjara, the black sand beach with basalt columns behind it and heavy Atlantic surf in front. The Reynisdrangar sea stacks stand offshore.

Glacier Lagoon

Then Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs drift across clear water on their way to the sea. It is the site most people picture when they think of the South Coast.

Fellsfjara

Diamond Beach sits on the Breiðamerkursandur glacial plain, right next to the lagoon. Icebergs wash ashore here and sit on black sand, which is the contrast the photographs are built on. Seals live along this stretch, and it is one of the better places in Iceland to see orcas from land.

Vatnajokull Glacier

Day three opens with a glacier hike on Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. The walk takes in sinkholes, crevasses, moulins and ridges, and the guide explains how each one forms.

Fjadrargljufur Canyon

After the glacier comes Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, known for its shape and, since 2015, as the location of Justin Bieber's I'll Show You video.

After visiting Fjadrargljufur

From Fjaðrárgljúfur the route heads back to Reykjavik, with hotel drop-off between 8:00 and 10:00 PM.
