Bridge Between Continents

The first day starts on the Reykjanes peninsula, at the Leif the Lucky bridge, or Miðlína, where you can stand between the Eurasian and North American plates.

Gunnuhver Hot Springs

Time at the Gunnuhver geothermal area: steam vents, hot mud pools and ground coloured by the minerals under it, with the Reykjanes lighthouse behind.

Kleifarvatn Lake

Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanesbær peninsula and among the deepest in Iceland at nearly 100 metres. Its water comes up through the porous lava around it, and it holds enough fish to keep anglers interested. The shoreline is lava covered in thousand year old moss.

Thingvellir National Park

Þingvellir National Park is one of the Golden Circle sites and two things at once: a geological one, where Öxarárfoss and the Silfra fissure exist because the crust is splitting, and a political one that shaped the country. Entry is free, but there is a parking fee, not included in the price.

Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths

The rye bread tour runs at 11:45 AM. The dough bakes in the ground on geothermal heat and comes out for tasting. Afterwards, the warm water of the Fontana baths, with the lake in front of you. If you have the appetite, Fridheimar farm nearby is worth the detour: horse breeding, horse shows and a tomato farm run entirely on geothermal energy with biological pest control, plus a restaurant built around its own tomatoes. Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss falls 60 metres and has a path running behind it, which is why it appears in so many photographs. Access to the area is free, but the parking fee is yours to pay and is not included.

Next

Next is Skógafoss, fed by meltwater from the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Standing near it means noise, spray and, when the light is right, rainbows in the droplets.

Vik

Vík í Mýrdal is a small village on the south coast, set between the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, the Jökulsá á Brú and Blautavísl rivers, and a long stretch of black beach.

Right in the morning

The morning brings a 4 hour ice cave exploration by super jeep. It starts in Vík í Mýrdal at 09:30 AM and runs to the Katla volcano, where lava and ice cap meet.

Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara beach and the Reynisfjall cliff behind it, walled in basalt columns. Offshore stand three rock stacks. The story goes that they are trolls who tried to reach shore and were caught by the daylight.

Dyrholaey

Dyrhólaey, Doorhill Island, is what remains of an island from thousands of years ago. The 120 metre rock formation has a hole through the middle that ships once sailed through. It is now one of the most visited sites in Iceland and home to a lot of birdlife.

Fjadrargljufur Canyon is one of the fixtures of the south coast: a winding gorge, a cold river at the bottom and sheep grazing above it. Justin Bieber filmed a music video here in 2015, which did the visitor numbers no harm.

Systrafoss

On to Kirkjubæjarklaustur and the Systrafoss waterfall, fed by lake Systravatn on the hill above. A short hike to the top gives a view over the whole area. Five minutes further on is Stjórnarfoss, another waterfall worth stopping for.

Skaftafell National Park

Skaftafell National Park has walking paths in several directions, one of which leads to Svartifoss, the black waterfall, named for the dark basalt columns around it. No admission fee, but the parking fee is not included in the price.

Harpa, the concert and conference hall, with an exterior designed around Icelandic nature. Entry to look around the building is free, though there is a small parking fee not included in the price.

Hallgrimskirkja

Hallgrimskirkja stands near downtown Reykjavik and the Rainbow Street. The top of the tower gives a 360 degree view over the city. The church itself is free to enter; the tower has an admission fee, not included here. If time allows before your flight, the Blue Lagoon is the obvious last stop. That is a recommendation only: admission is not included and you book it yourself on the Blue Lagoon website. Allow 2 hours including the drive from Hallgrímskirkja.
