Private Two Day South Coast Tour: Glacier Lagoon, Ice Cave and Aurora

ReykjavikTwo days along the whole south coast of Iceland with Hidden Iceland, in a private group. Day one covers the waterfalls and the coast: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, the black sand at Reynisfjara, and a walk along the rim of Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon before reaching the overnight accommodation. If the sky is clear, the aurora is a possibility from there. Day two starts at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs drift across the water and wash up on Diamond Beach. From there the group meets the ice cave specialists from Local Guide, who run specialised Super Jeeps to reach the glacier. The cave sits in an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, and the visit includes a short glacier hike alongside it. The Super Jeep matters more than it sounds: the caves that form in Vatnajökull each winter are nowhere near a paved road, and the vehicle is what makes them a day trip instead of an expedition.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall
Seljalandsfoss, falling nearly 60 metres. When the path is not iced over you can walk behind the water and see it from the other side. The flow comes from meltwater off the summit of Eyjafjallajökull.
Skogafoss
Skógafoss next, a vertical 200 foot drop with a lot of water behind it. You can take it in from a distance or walk right up to the base, though the spray means waterproofs, which Hidden Iceland can lend you. On sunny days a rainbow forms in the mist. Both Game of Thrones and Vikings filmed here.
Reynisfjara Beach
Reynisfjara, the black sand beach with its hexagonal basalt columns, which photograph best on calm days. Puffins nest in the cliffs overhead in summer; in winter the waves come in hard. The Black Beach Restaurant is there for anyone who has not brought food, and the turnip soup made from local produce is a favourite among the Hidden Iceland guides.
Vik
A short photo stop in this seaside town, or time to pick up snacks at the supermarket.
Fjadrargljufur Canyon
A canyon almost nobody pronounces right on the first try, and a good walk out to the viewpoints.
Skaftafell National Park
The route passes through Skaftafell National Park, with views of Iceland's highest mountains and the glaciers below them.
Jokulsarlon
The iceberg filled lagoon in Vatnajökull National Park, and the reason most people come this far east.
Vatnajokull Glacier
Here the group joins Local Guide of Vatnajökull and their Super Jeeps to reach the remote ice caves of the glacier. The hike runs from the jeep to the glacier front, where you go inside the ice and then walk a short way on top of it. The blues and the textures are what people remember.
Fellsfjara
A walk along the black sand of Diamond Beach, where icebergs from the lagoon come ashore and sit glinting on the dark sand. There is no other beach quite like it.

The drive back to Reykjavik crosses the vast moss covered lava field of Eldhraun, with a stop at one of the guides' favourite restaurants for a late lunch or early dinner.
