The hunt runs with a professional photographer in a spacious van, which matters because the driving is real: at least 50 km one way, usually around 120 km, to reach the darkest spot available. A brownie and berry tea handle the hunger. There is no barbecue, because the priority is finding clear sky rather than standing over sausages. Working from cloud cover and solar wind data, the night can take in 2 or 3 viewpoints out of the 100 the operator has mapped across Finnish and Swedish Lapland. Some guests call it a road trip. Others call it a hunt. An information email goes out by 16:00 on the day of the tour at the latest, because departure can move one to three hours either way for better weather. Tours usually start between 17:00 and 19:00 and end between 02:00 and 05:00.
