Rovaniemi straddles the Arctic Circle at 66°33′N, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the aurora in the Lapland sky on roughly 200 nights a year. That number gets quoted at you constantly here. It is also close to useless on its own, because it counts nights when the aurora was present, not nights when anyone could see it through the cloud.

The Rovaniemi promise, and its small print
Nine of the 44 departures on this page attach a refund to a blank night. That is unusual. In Reykjavík or Tromsø the standard offer is a free second attempt at best. Here it is your money back, and several operators lead with it.
The catch is that the phrases are not equivalent, and the difference sits exactly where you would expect: in the definition of success. Read the wording on the individual tour page before you assume you are covered.

The camera clause is the one worth pausing on. A modern sensor at a fifteen-second exposure will record a green band that the human eye reads as a faint grey smudge, or misses entirely. An operator who defines success that way is not being dishonest, and the photograph is genuinely yours to keep. But if what you came for is the sight of it, the two definitions are not the same thing, and only one of them is written into the refund.
Why they can afford to promise it
Geography, mostly. Rovaniemi sits in the middle of a road network that runs in every direction across flat forest, and it is maintained through the winter because people live out there. The Swedish border at Tornio is about 130 km west, and several operators on this page say plainly that they will cross it if the clear sky is on the other side. Two say they have no kilometre limit at all, and one describes routine nights of 300 km.
There is a second reason, and it is in the cloud record. From November to January the sky above this town is usable on about one night in five, and those are the months when most visitors arrive for the Christmas traffic. A market selling its most expensive evenings in its least reliable weeks needs something to say, and the refund is what it says. On an island, or up a fjord, the same words would be unpayable.
Formats you will not find anywhere else
Three of these departures involve getting into a frozen lake. The suit is a dry rescue suit, the sort used for ice rescue work: it keeps you warm and floats you without any effort, and swimming ability is not required. The reason it exists as an aurora product is geometry. Standing up, you spend the night with your neck bent back. Floating on your back, the sky is simply in front of you, and the cold stops being the story after about thirty seconds.
Then there are the fixed-site evenings, which are the opposite philosophy: a kota, the Sami tent with a fire in the middle, or a hundred-year-old lakeside cottage, twenty minutes from town, where the group settles in and waits. These do not chase. If the cloud sits over that spot all night, that is the night. They are cheaper, warmer and much better with children, and they trade away the one advantage this region has. And one operator sells a pass instead of a tour: three or five consecutive days, with a check-in each afternoon and a seat on that evening's departure if the sky is worth it. For anyone staying a week, it is the most honest product on this page.
What a night costs
Prices are the lowest published adult rate for each departure. Private tours are priced for the vehicle, not per person, which is why the top of the range looks alarming until you divide it by four. When to go, and why it is not the equinoxes
The received wisdom for Lapland is September and March, on the strength of geomagnetic activity peaking at the equinoxes. Half of that survives contact with the data and half does not.
Two things decide how much aurora time a month actually contains: how often the sky is usable, and how many hours of real darkness there are to use it in. Multiplied together they rank the Rovaniemi season like this.

March survives, and comfortably: it is the best month of the Rovaniemi year on every measure at once. Fifty per cent of nights usable, the highest figure in Finland, four and a quarter hours of darkness, 61% of nights free of moonlight, the equinox peak in geomagnetic activity, and low-season prices because the Christmas traffic has gone home. The new moon of 8 March 2027 falls inside it.
September does not survive. Its cloud figure is the second best of the year at 41.7%, and there are 2.8 hours of astronomical darkness to use it in, with only 37% of nights free of moonlight. It comes out last of the seven, at roughly half of March. The equinox argument applies to it as much as to March, and it is not enough to rescue a month with almost no dark in it.
October is the surprise, second on the list and almost never recommended. And December, the busiest month by a distance, is fourth on a sky that is open one night in four and a half.
One limit, stated because it argues against this ranking. It measures opportunity, not the chance that the aurora does something inside the window. Geomagnetic storms are close to twice as frequent around the equinoxes, which favours September and March specifically. We checked: doubling September still leaves it behind October, and March wins either way. It narrows the gap rather than closing it.

Before you book a Rovaniemi hunt
When should I come?
March, and it is the clearest recommendation on this site: the best sky in Finland at 50.0%, four hours of darkness, 61% of nights moon-free, the equinox peak in activity and low-season prices. October is the underrated second choice. Not September, despite what most guides say: it has almost no darkness in it and comes out last of the seven months.
Is a money-back guarantee worth paying more for?
Sometimes, and most of all in the months you should probably avoid. Compare the guaranteed tour against the cheapest departure that night: if the premium is 40 EUR and the guarantee returns 180 EUR, it is a reasonable bet, and from November to January with a sky open one night in five it is a good one. Check the definition of success first, because the camera clause changes the maths entirely.
What does the 8-guest cap actually buy?
Two things. The vehicle can turn around on a forest road and reach places a coach cannot, and there are fewer phone screens, camera displays and head torches leaking light around you. Faint aurora is genuinely harder to see standing next to twenty other people's screens.
Will they really drive into Sweden?
Several say so in writing, and the border at Tornio is about 130 km away, which is a normal night's driving for these operators. If it matters to you, book one of the departures that states no distance limit rather than assuming.
Camp evening or a chase?
It depends on the month more than most people realise. A fixed camp in March, at 50% usable sky, is a good bet and a lovely evening. The same camp in November, at 20%, is a fire in a field four nights out of five. With one night in the low-sky months, take the chase.
