Reykjavik

A private aurora hunt with one guide, your group only, plus outdoor chairs, warm drinks and professional photographs of the night. The guide runs the aurora forecast for the Facebook group Northern Lights Iceland, and reads cloud cover and solar wind data for a living. The outcome still belongs to the weather, but whatever is visible on a given night, this is someone who knows where to stand to see it. What comes with the tour: a private vehicle and guide, professional photographs, an outdoor chair for everyone, and warm drinks including tea, coffee, hot chocolate and spiked versions. Two commitments worth reading before booking. If conditions are poor on your date, the guide cancels and refunds, and you can rebook for another night. If the tour runs and the lights do not appear, a second attempt is free. Both are unusual in a market where most operators sell the departure regardless of the sky.

What's included

  • Photographs of you and the lights
  • Hot chocolate

  1. Reykjavik

Finding the aurora is this guide's speciality, along with reading how strong a display is likely to be, though nothing about the sky can be promised. Expect a straight answer about the odds on any given night, so you can decide whether to go or wait. Photographs of you under the lights are part of it, taken to bring home. Visibility depends on cloud cover and on how active the aurora is. A pre-briefing goes out 3 hours before departure explaining the chances and what to expect, sent by email after the last cloud cover update shortly after 18:00. On that basis you either go or move to another night. Expectations vary from person to person, and so does the aurora: some nights it fills the sky, others it stays faint enough that only a camera picks it up.
