Reykjavik

A private aurora tour with flexible pickup times and flexible pickup and drop-off locations. The driver guides do this for a living: every night they read the weather and drive toward whatever clear sky exists around the capital region, which is the single biggest factor in whether you see anything. The group is yours alone, so the guide talks to you rather than to a coachload, about the aurora itself and about Icelandic culture and traditions. The vehicle is private, and warm drinks and snacks come along. The date and time are yours to pick, with the option to reschedule if the forecast turns against you. A private booking is worth the difference on a night when the plan has to change twice. A full coach commits to its first choice of location; a car does not.

Stakkholt 4b, 105 Reykjavík, Iceland

On Raudararstigur, near where it crosses Laugavegur 120. GPS coordinates 64.142658,-21.913866. The guide waits with a placard reading ICELAND PARADISE TOURS.

  1. South Region

Pickup is from your hotel or an agreed meeting point, in a comfortable vehicle. The guide chooses the viewing spot from that night's weather and aurora activity. It can be 30 minutes away or several hours. Once there, the waiting is the tour: the dark Arctic sky, and the guide explaining the science and the history of the aurora while you watch. Warm refreshments come out, hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls. Afterwards you are driven back to your hotel or agreed drop-off point. Worth saying plainly: the aurora is a natural phenomenon and nobody can guarantee it on a given night. What the guides do is take you to the areas with the best odds and keep you informed about the conditions.
