Three Day Tour: Ice Cave, South Coast, Golden Circle and Aurora

ReykjavikThree days that put the Golden Circle and the South Coast on the same ticket, with a blue ice cave inside Europe's largest glacier at the far end of it. Day one covers the classic circuit: Þingvellir National Park, the geothermal field at Geysir, and Gullfoss. There is also a stop the itineraries usually skip, a traditional dairy farm where the ice cream is free. Days two and three run east along the south coast, past the black sand at Reynisfjara to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in Vatnajökull National Park. That is where the glacier hike and the ice cave happen. The aurora is on the itinerary too, on the nights nature allows it. Three days is roughly what the distance demands. Jökulsárlón is around 380 km from Reykjavík, and the day trips that reach it in one go spend most of their daylight hours on the road.

Thingvellir National Park
Þingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, and one of the clearest places on earth to see it happening. Iceland's largest natural lake sits here, with a wide range of fish and birdlife. The site also carries the country's history: Icelanders founded their parliament here in 930 AD, and the chieftains met every summer. The name translates as Parliament Plains.
Gullfoss Falls
Meltwater from Langjökull, Iceland's second largest glacier, drops into a deep canyon and becomes the Golden Falls. On a clear day the glacier is visible in the distance and a rainbow forms in the spray.
Site de Geysir
The Geysir geothermal field, with hundreds of coloured hot springs and two geysers. Geysir itself gave every geyser in the world its name, though it now erupts rarely. Strokkur is the reliable one: every 5 minutes, up to 40 metres.
Seljalandsfoss waterfall
Pickup in Reykjavík in a small minibus, then straight south. Seljalandsfoss is loud enough to announce itself before you see it. Bring a raincoat and you can take the short path behind the falls, where the ground shakes from the weight of the water.
Skogafoss
Further east, Skógafoss. The river Skógá drops 60 metres off a cliff at the head of a small gorge, then carries on toward the Atlantic. A staircase runs up the side to the shelf above the falls. Count the steps on the way up if you like.
Skaftafell National Park
A hike on an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, one of the largest glaciers in the country. After meeting the glacier guides and fitting the equipment, which includes helmets, harnesses, crampons and ice axes, the walk on the ice lasts an hour and a half. Skaftafell has stood in for other worlds in Game of Thrones, Interstellar and James Bond, among others. Then the blue ice cave. The hike in takes a few minutes, and waterproof boots with ankle support and a hard sole make it easier. Glaciers in Iceland can only be entered with a certified guide and safety gear. Glacier Lagoon
Day three starts at Jökulsárlón, a lagoon 200 m deep fed by Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet of Europe's largest glacier. Icebergs break off all year, so the water is usually full of ice drifting south. Walk along the shore and the main thing you notice is the silence. Before heading back, a super jeep takes the group to a blue ice cave in the glacier.
Fellsfjara
Across the road, the icebergs that leave the lagoon reach the Atlantic and get pushed straight back onto the sand by tide and wind. The beach is scattered with ice in every size, catching the light against the black sand, in whites and blues.
Reynisfjara Beach
Further east, Reynisfjara. Atlantic waves hit the basalt columns in the cliffs above the sand, with the sea stacks offshore and the cliffs of Dýrhólaey in the distance. Puffins and dozens of other species nest on top of those cliffs from June to August.

- We recommend you bring hiking boots with slip-resistant soles if you are visiting in the winter. Hiking boots are available at the time of booking.
- Ice caves are a dynamic natural phenomena only accessible during wintertime when temperatures drop. Each year new unique caves are formed in different areas of the glacier. We visit a naturally formed ice cave during this tour. The photos are from this winter season, but the cave and other formations we visit might have changed due to the nature of formations.
