Rovaniemi

Three Finnish things in one evening: a sauna, a cold plunge, and a Lappish dinner in a wooden cottage well outside the city. The aurora hunt runs alongside all of it. How you use the sauna is your business. The Nordic method is 10 to 15 minutes in the heat and then straight into ice cold water, or into a pile of snow if the lake is not an option. The cold after the heat raises blood flow, releases pressure and pushes endorphins up, which is why people who try it once keep doing it. Afterwards the group returns to the cottage for a blazed salmon dinner by the fireplace. The cooking method is worth watching: the fish goes on a board beside an open fire rather than in a pan.

  2. Winter

Sauna bathing is not a seasonal activity in Finland. Winter or summer, midnight or evening, it happens. The habit runs so deep in Finnish culture that no set of difficult circumstances has managed to interrupt it, and it passes from one generation to the next without anyone deciding to keep it. What the sauna does is raise the body temperature throughout, close to a fever. That heat, the quiet view, and the lake air breathed afterwards produce the effect people come back for. The best window for the northern lights runs from the end of October to the middle of March. You need clear sky, a properly black night and some luck, which is why this runs as an evening departure only. The sauna itself sits on an Arctic lake.
