Rovaniemi
81 departures, the best March in Finland, and the worst months to book are the ones everybody books
Rovaniemi sits exactly on the Arctic Circle, which is the line the town has built an industry on, and which is also quietly moving: the Circle is defined by the tilt of the Earth's axis, that tilt is not fixed, and the line is currently drifting north at roughly 14 metres a year. The painted stripe at Santa Claus Village is where the Circle was when somebody painted it. Nobody minds. It is a good line to stand on.
What the position actually buys is measurable, and it is very uneven across the season. Across eleven seasons of reanalysis, Rovaniemi gets a usable sky on 50.0% of March nights and 20.0% of November nights. That is the widest swing of any European destination we measure. There is a right month to come here and a wrong one, and they are three weeks apart in the booking calendar.
The wrong one is December, at 22.3%, and it is the busiest month of the year because of the other business this town runs. Santa Claus Village fills the flights from late November, the hotels are at their most expensive, and the sky is at close to its worst. None of that is a scandal; it is simply not what the marketing implies, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.
